Bagdogra Airport, West Bengal, is a next-generation international airport being developed as the New Civil Enclave by CP Kukreja Architects, establishing a new benchmark in airport terminal architecture and aviation infrastructure design in India. Serving as the principal gateway to the Eastern Himalayas, the airport strengthens regional and international connectivity to destinations including Darjeeling, Gangtok, Kalimpong, Kurseong and Mirik, while supporting the growth of tourism, commerce and the wider regional economy. Conceived as an iconic transportation hub, the terminal draws inspiration from the majestic Kangchenjunga mountain range and the undulating tea gardens of Darjeeling, translating the distinctive landscape of North Bengal into a contemporary architectural expression. Its dynamic façade, composed of parametric aluminium fins, provides solar control while evoking the layered contours and natural rhythm of the region. Envisioned as a net-zero airport, the project incorporates energy-efficient building systems, climate-responsive planning, flood-resilient infrastructure, stormwater management and environmentally sensitive design strategies to ensure long-term operational and environmental performance. The passenger terminal prioritises seamless circulation, operational efficiency, flexibility and an enhanced traveller experience, while its modular planning supports future expansion and evolving aviation requirements. By integrating sustainable airport design, resilient infrastructure, passenger-centric planning and a strong regional identity, Bagdogra Airport represents a future-ready model for aviation infrastructure and reinforces its role as one of Eastern India’s most significant transportation gateways.
